Types of Lights to Cultivate Your Own Medical Cannabis

In this article we will explain what of light you should use when growing marijuana inside.

Types of Lights to Cultivate Your Own Medical Cannabis

Choosing the light for your cannabis growing area you must think about the cost. This will be the determining factor. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) are to be considered the best growing lamps. But they are the most expensive. High Pressure Sodium lamps emit the yellow, orange and red color spectrum, which especially good for flowering.

Marijuana should receive 1000-3000 lumens per square foot. The best result will be achieved with around 2,000 lumens per square foot. If plants receive not enough light during the vegetative stage, they stretch out. The more light, the tighter the buds will be. A 1500 watt lamp will be good for 10 x 10 square foot room. Some marijuana growers prefer to have a lot more light.

TIP: You must take care of proper amount of CO2. The more intense the light is, the more CO2 is needed for maximum cannabis plant growth.

Choosing the size of a lamp, remember the square footage of your growing area. That will tell you the lumens you need.

Types of Growing Lights

High Intensity Discharge Lamps (HID\’s) are very efficient and easy to work with. Don\’t use anything low wattage. They are not for marijuana growing. High Intensity Discharge lamps come in two types:

1. Metal Halide (MH) lamps radiate a white light with a blue shade. These lamps are the best for the vegetative stage.

2. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps radiate a pink to orange light spectrum. This type of lamp is much more efficient than Metal Halide. HPS lamps produce more light and consume less energy. These lamps are good for plants during flowering stage.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) is the most up to date type of growing lamps. This type of lamp emits the less amount of heat. They are smaller and they use less energy.
